From Korea-based 10Minds, a Smart Pillow Designed to Stop Snoring

March 5th, 2021 Jeremy Glowacki

The progression of smart home tech product development has finally reached the good ol’ bed pillow. Through what Seoul, Korea-based 10Minds calls “sleep science-based technology,” the company’s Motion Pillow was designed to alleviate chronic snoring.

According to 10Minds, during the night a person can snore more than 3,200 times and wake up more than 240 times per night. This means that even if you feel rested mentally, your body may still be tired in the morning.

The Motion Pillow, a CES 2020 Innovation Award Honoree, looks like a typical cotton high-end pillow but is attached to a “Solution Box” that helps analyze the sleep patterns of the user. Everything that the Solution Box monitor can be reviewed, managed, and evaluated through the app.

The Need for a Motion Pillow

It has been estimated by Johns Hopkins Medicine that 45 percent of adults snore infrequently, while 25 percent snore regularly. While snoring is not necessarily a bad thing, it can be a sign of serious underlying health conditions like sleep apnea.

While research claims that roughly 30 percent of people have sleep apnea, there are many who don’t even know they have it. Additionally, getting a good night’s sleep helps reduce other medical issues as well like depression and stress, while increasing an immune system’s capability to prevent diseases.

Analyzing Sleeper’s Head Position

The Motion Pillow’s Solution Box is able to analyze the sleeper’s head positions and breathing patterns throughout the night. Then it will convert the data algorithms into adjustments that need to be made to assist the sleeper’s breathing patterns by opening up airways and ultimately alleviating snoring.

The adjustments are done through built-in airbags that change the pillow’s shape and gently raise or lower the sleeper’s head.Motion Pillow 2

Through what the company dubbed its Sleep Pressure Monitoring System (SPMS), three different levels of noise can be monitored to assist in different levels of snoring.

Although the Motion Pillow is attached to an electrical box, there is no risk of exposure to electromagnetic waves or radiation, according to the company.

So, what’s the cost of this better and healthier night’s sleep? The list price for a Motion Pillow and Solution Box is $378. If you act soon, however, you can get it for the sale price of $320. That’s half of what a CPAP machine costs out of pocket, if your insurance doesn’t pick up the tab.
