Ring has introduced Smart Video Search, a new AI feature that makes it easier to find specific moments in a Ring system’s video history.
Ring already offered package, person, and doorbell ring notifications, which helped manage what’s happening at a front door or find out when a package arrived. However, until now, finding a specific moment would take more time. With Smart Video Search, Ring users can now quickly find something they are looking for, giving a better sense of what’s happening around a home or business.
Smart Video Search is one of Ring’s most advanced AI features. It’s powered by Ring IQ — a combination of Ring AI technology and in-house expertise — and uses Visual Language Modeling (VLM) to match text to images and quickly deliver results. Instead of scrolling through your video footage, you can type queries directly into the Ring app to quickly pinpoint the right moment.
For example, a Ring user might search for “raccoon in the backyard last night” and find the answer to why those trash cans were knocked over, while searching for “red bicycle in the driveway” might turn up endearing videos of your oldest child teaching your youngest how to ride a bike, or as is more likely in my family, one trying to knock the other over.
Smart Video Search will first roll out in public beta and at launch, Ring users will be able to search queries related to animals, locations, packages, people, time, vehicles, weather, and even some activities, like jumping, running, playing, or riding.
Along with creating this new feature, Ring is also committed to developing responsible AI. Smart Video Search uses an input moderation technique to prevent searching for offensive, inappropriate, or harmful content.
Smart Video Search works with all Ring video doorbells and cameras and is rolling out to select customers in public beta. On November 5, 2024, Ring will launch a revamped subscription service called Ring Home and Smart Video Search — along with other new features like 24/7 Recording — will be available for Ring Home Premium subscribers in the U.S. for $19.99 per month.
