MBX streaming audio solutions from Russound now will include AirPlay 2, which is made available via a free firmware update that is being deployed to all MBX systems set to “Auto Update.”
Consumers and dealers who opted out of the automatic update have the option to add AirPlay 2 support through a manual update by their authorized Russound installer.

“Since first rolling out the MBX system, Apple AirPlay 2 has consistently been the most requested update from our dealers and consumers,” said Russound CEO Charlie Porritt. “We’re thrilled to finally add it to what is already one of the most powerful and intuitive streaming solutions available to custom installation specialists.”
With the addition of Apple AirPlay 2, consumers will further enjoy easy, intuitive streaming from smartphones and tablets of synchronized audio to multiple rooms of their home through Russound’s two MBX streaming solutions: MBX-AMP, a full-featured streaming audio player with an onboard amplifier, and the MBX-PRE non-amplified preamp designed for seamless compatibility with the company’s MCA-Series controllers, including the popular MCA-66 and MCA-88.
MBX-AMP is a single-box solution that is easy to install and configure as a streaming audio system for residential installations, while access to SiriusXM for Business makes it a smart and reliable solution in light commercial projects. Russound designed the MBX-AMP to be a decentralized, amplified streaming solution for installers who want to offer the most up-to-date streaming media options to their clients.
Full control of the MBX-AMP is managed through the company’s newly released Russound App as well as Russound’s XTS5.5 wall-mounted touchscreen or IPK-1 elegant, convenient keypad.
The MBX-AMP offers 50 watts per channel at 8 ohms and is scalable for up to 32 rooms. In addition to built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, it features voice control integration and driver support for Control4, URC, and RTI systems.
Aside from streaming audio from popular internet sources, the MBX-AMP also streams from DLNA-compliant audio sources. Additionally, it features Bluetooth with full AVRCP support, including metadata and album art from supported sources.
Though packed with myriad features, the MBX-AMP and MBX-PRE are decidedly elegant, with an aesthetically appealing design that is slim enough to hide behind a TV. In addition, the MBX-AMP is included in the Russound Certified Installer (RCI) Program. “RCI Required” models boast a feature designed to drastically reduce unauthorized online sales of the company’s products while ensuring that consumers receive the benefits of working with certified installation professionals.
